The Cost of Discipleship is one of the bestselling titles on the SCM Classics list and one of the classics of modern theology. Perhaps Dietrich Bonhoeffer's most radical book, this reading of the Sermon on the Mount has influenced many Christians throughout the world over the last 50 years. 50 years after its first publication, the book is reintroduced to readers of our time by Stephen Plant, Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and one of the leading Bonhoeffer scholars of our time.

Author Information

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-45) is one of the most influential Protestant theologians of the twentieth century. His death at the hands of the Nazis has made him a modern martyr and an icon of radical Christianity.

Judges' and contributors' comments

John Pridmore: Bonhoeffer taught that, as Jesus bears the sin of others, so must I. Having read Bonhoeffer, I know what must be done if Christ is to have his way in me. And I tremble.

Peter Price: The influence of Dietrich Bonhoeffer on contemporary Christianity has yet to be fully appreciated or evaluated. His life, writings and courage are evidence of an exemplary Christian life, and the basis of it is defined by The Cost of Discipleship. Of course, the companion, Letters and Papers from Prison, enriches our understanding of the man. In terms of the top 10 books, it would be easy to dismiss our understanding of Bonhoeffer’s influence as ‘work in progress’ – possibly – but if Christianity is to get out of the boondocks it is currently in, Bonhoeffer’s Cost of Discipleship is essential reading.
